Finnmark: North and East – Largest and fewest
Finnmark is situated North and East in Norway.Finnmark is situated in the extreme North East of the country. Of all the counties, it has the largest area and the fewest inhabitants. Its mainland stretches as far North as to the peninsula Kinnarodden and as far East as to the island of Hornøya i Vardø municipality. Finnmark borders on the Arctic Ocean, The Barent Sea, Finland, Russia and Troms County.

Seen from a historical perspective the county is situated in an area that is very sensitive indeed, in terms of military importance and political security. Finnmark and the frontier between Finnmark, Finland, Sweden and Russia is, moreover, the main geographic territory for the Sami peoples.

Natural resources abound i Finnmark, on land and in the ocean. Exploitation and export of fish resources in the Barents Sea is vital for employment and habitation in the North. Other important fields are reindeer husbandry and agriculture.
